CHILD support groups in KwaZulu-Natal have welcomed the government's decision to extend the age limit for child support grants.

Nationally more than 13million people receivegovernment grants. Nine million of these are children.

Last week the cabinet announced that as of January 1 next year the age limit will be extended from 15 years and that children aged 16 years will be eligible to receive a child support grant.

The amount was increased in April this year to R240.

The Black Sash, the Alliance for Children's Entitlement to Social Security, and the Children's Institute welcomed the decision. Children's Rights Centre information officer Noreen Ramdem said it was the best news they have had in a while.
