SOUTH AFRICA will soon know who the country's latest unsung heroes in early childhood development are, writes Victor Mecoamere.

These community builders are the national finalists of the yearly Absa and Sowetan Early Childhood Development Awards and will be recognised, acknowledged and rewarded at a gala in Pretoria on December 3.

Authentication and validation site visits and provincial award ceremonies will take place this month and in November. They will be conducted by representatives of the nation-building partnership that is driving this campaign to nurture well-rounded future leaders.

The partners include SABC Education, national Education Department, South African Congress for Early Childhood Development and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, Sowetan, Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation and Absa Foundation.

Awards are for best resource and training organisations, home-based centre or playgroups, practitioners and community-based centres, innovative programmes and publications.
