Mandate still unclear

SAFA and Carlos Alberto Parreira are yet to agree on what the Brazilian's mandate for Bafana Bafana is going to be.

SAFA and Carlos Alberto Parreira are yet to agree on what the Brazilian's mandate for Bafana Bafana is going to be.

While stemming the tide of defeats that have besieged Bafana is obviously of the utmost importance, Safa did not go into detail on what their expectation of Parreira this time is.

During Parreira's first time with Bafana there had been a clear announcement from the then Safa leadership that nothing less than Bafana advancement into the second round of the 2010 World Cup for will be acceptable.

Safa president Kirsten Nematandani yesterday said he could not discuss what his executive's expectations are with regard to Parreira's performance.

"We have not signed the contract with Mr Parreira yet, I therefore cannot say what the terms will be," Nematandani said yesterday.

When the announcement was made of Parreira's second stint at the helm of Bafana on Friday, Nematandani emphasised that Parreira "had to finish what he started".

Bafana play Japan at Orlando Stadium on November 14 and Jamaica in Bloemfontein three days later where Parreira will be in charge.

Meanwhile, two Absa Premiership coaches Bidvest Wits' Roger De Sa and Owen Da Gama of Bloemfontein Celtic were noncommittal on what they expect Bafana to achieve under Parreira's tutelage yesterday.

"I think Parreira coming here again has got nothing to do with Safa - it is all Fifa's doing. But I do think six months is too short a time for him to do anything significant and I think our planning tends to be too short-term. This is just a quick fix and it is never going to work," De Sa said.

Da Gama said: "He must select a balanced squad and create lots of healthy competition for positions among players."
