A KWAZULU-Natal man was shot dead and his accomplice seriously wounded in a shootout with a woman motorist after a failed hijacking in Pinetown's 7th Avenue yesterday morning.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Daniela Veldhuizen said a 57-year-old woman was putting up her business' advertising board when she was confronted by two armed suspects.

"While she was busy putting up the board, three suspects in a grey Toyota Tazz stopped next to her.

"Two of the suspects, who were armed with firearms, got out of the car. The other suspect stayed in the car. They tried to hijack her car but the woman drew her own firearm. An exchange of gunfire ensued," Veldhuizen said.

She said in the shootout one of the suspects was killed on the scene. The other suspect was seriously injured as he was shot in the head by the victim, who was also shot.

"The injured suspect is in a critical condition in hospital, while the victim suffered a wound to her groin. The third suspect, who had remained in the car, managed to escape and is still at large," she said.

A 9mm pistol was recovered at the scene and Pinetown police are searching for the third suspect.
