FARMERS union Agri-SA has promised to increase food production and restore Africa to being the food basket to the world despite the climate changes threatening crops all over Africa.
The union signed a 30-year lease agreement with the Congolese government on Tuesday that will see the union having access to 200000 hectares of land.
Agri-SA deputy president Theo de Jager said the lack of water and land in South Africa was making things difficult for them to achieve their target of increasing their production.
The Congolese government made land available to the South African Farmers Union, a portion of farms that was abandoned by the state.
The union said the offer did not mean they would leave South Africa.
Congolese Minister of Agriculture Robert Mabundu said he hoped that the farmers would be able to produce enough food and save the country from importing.
De Jager said they have also received invitations from other Southern African countries who were offering land for free.
