The Senior Citizens Focus Cooperative assumed control of the centre last year and has a 10-year lease.
It is already offering 23 skills training courses to the community. About 5400 people have already signed on for nursing, catering, carpentry and business skills.
"We want people to be able to work on their own after two years. Then they can contribute to society by eradicating poverty, crime and improving the health of the community," said Steve Senama, a member of the board.
"We have registered with several Setas and are awaiting final accreditation. The nursing course is needed immediately in the community because many people have hypertension and sugar diabetes."
Mama Angel was at the centre to donate office equipment and stationery. Sowetan was invited by Reuben Mogano, who is a friend of the board.
The National Development Agency is trying to assist Funda to function. Funda Centre has a history. The senior citizens want Sowetans to continue to benefit from its services," Mogano said.
"The agency will further contribute by looking for partners who will advance the work of the NGO."
The board is made up of Senama, Professor Jacob Semeela, Ross Rashe, Boy Mtimkulu, Dimakatso Aphane and Tshepo Rapulane. Aphane said there were many dropouts and the centre was offering a business course that was a must for all disciplines.
"We would appreciate it if we could get help to help others," Aphane said.
