The West Rand district municipality has joined forces with former South African Marathon champion Daniel "Mampudi" Radebe to develop athletics in the area.

The West Rand district municipality has joined forces with former South African Marathon champion Daniel "Mampudi" Radebe to develop athletics in the area.

They are staging the West Rand District Municipality Mampudi 10km challenge in Randfontein on Saturday in association with Kagiso Striders Athletics Club.

"It's a well-known fact that athletics was big on the West Rand in the past but now the problem is that a lack of sponsorship is killing the sport," Radebe said.

"The process of reviving athletics clubs on the West Rand is under way and the support from the district municipality is appreciated.

"On Saturday, we will also have a 5km fun run in order to accommodate the beginners too. We want it to be an all-inclusive affair for all the family members."

Big-name runners like Tshamano Setone, Poppy Mlambo and Lebo and Lebohang Phalula are expected to take part in Saturday's race as part of their preparations for the Nedbank Soweto Marathon on November 1.

Registration for the 10km is R30 and R10 for the fun run.

In the senior men's and women's 10km races, the first, second and third runners home will receive R1700, R500 and R300 respectively.

Bridget Mkhondwana, the municipality's communications officer, said: "We are fully behind Mampudi in his efforts to develop athletics.

"Saturday's race is one of the special projects of our executive mayor, Faith Matshikiza."
