TWENTY nine fraudulently issued learner's licences have been cancelled, the North West public safety department said yesterday.

"The learner licences were allegedly issued to illiterate applicants who were supposed to have applied to the relevant MEC for permission to be tested orally," said spokesman Lesiba Moses Kgwele.

"The examiner [apparently from Orkney testing centre] who was suspected of fraudulently issuing the licenses has since been suspended."

A criminal case is also being investigated by the police. - Sapa
