Former eNdumeni municipality mayor Thandeka Nukani will continue pocketing her monthly salary of R18661 despite languishing in jail.

The package includes a R17830 salary and R831 cellphone allowance. Nukani lost her mayoral position during a floor-crossing period when two ANC councillors jumped ship to join the IFP. She is now a full-time ANC councillor in ward 4.

Nukani, her driver Peter Khumalo and her boyfriend Bongani Shangase were denied bail by the Utrecht magistrate's court last week. They are facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder after they allegedly conspired to poison her nephew, Siyabonga Nukani, who is serving a 20-year sentence for his part in the murder of ANC councillor and whistle-blower Grishen Bujram.

Nukani will appear in the Ladysmith high court today on a murder charge related to the Bujram killing, for which Shangase is serving a life sentence.

Municipal manager David Cebekhulu said: " We will continue paying her salary because she has not been found guilty. It is her party (ANC) or the MEC that can take a decision ."

Bongani Xulu, the secretary of the ANC's Bhambatha region, of which Nukani is an executive member, said they would meet her before making a decision.
