A NATION that cherishes its nationhood and identity never forgets the heroes and heroines who shaped it and gave it its moral compass.

A NATION that cherishes its nationhood and identity never forgets the heroes and heroines who shaped it and gave it its moral compass.

The annals of this country's history are filled with the names of many such courageous individuals. They occupy a special place of pride in our collective consciousness.

Among them is Albertina Sisulu, who turned 91 yesterday, one of the foremost matriarchs of our liberation struggle.

When the leaders of the liberation movements were either incarcerated on Robben Island or had been forced into exile, Sisulu and other women stepped into the breach to fill the leadership vacuum.

With her husband Walter in jail and some of her children in exile, she never flinched from a sense of national duty but remained a tower of strength to young activists.

Best Wishes, maSisulu!
