To deal with the problem, the Gauteng government has launched the Early Childhood Development Institute and tasked it with coordinating ECD services in the province.

According to studies, a child goes through a journey of development and it is therefore imperative that children receive the necessary support for development to take place.

According to Stranger Kgamphe, a PhD student in childhood development, "many children in rural areas appear healthy, but according to the WHO standards they are malnourished and this limits certain childhood development.
