Rotten cops 'bad for morale'

THE policeman who was charged 70 times for offences ranging from attempted murder to rape is not the only rotten apple in the Free State police force, says the DA.

THE policeman who was charged 70 times for offences ranging from attempted murder to rape is not the only rotten apple in the Free State police force, says the DA.

Yesterday the Sunday Times revealed that a 59-year-old Park Road police station inspector, Zenzile Daluxolo Makhanda, had been charged more than 70 times over the past 30 years.

The paper reported that despite facing charges of attempted murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, Makhanda is still at work.

DA Free State leader Roy Jankielsohn now wants Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa to probe the Free State provincial police commissioner, Tshepoebotse Mashigo.

"There are allegations within the police that certain individuals are untouchable because of their political connections and this is very bad for morale," he said.
