THE Limpopo department of roads and transport will make use of some of its machinery to assist emerging contractors who will be working on the revamped Gundu Lashu project aimed at improving roads in rural areas.

Limpopo MEC for roads and transport Pinkie Kekana said this during the launch of an extended public works emerging contractor learnership programme in Tzaneen on Friday.

She said that through the Gundu Lashu programme contractors used strictly manual methods to built roads and most of the projects were taking a long time to be completed.

The programme forms part of a revamped Gundu Lashu projects, which were designed to strike a balance between conventional and labour intensive programmes to ensure good quality of work.

A total of 60 young emerging contractors are participating in the programme.

The two-year leanership programme will include theory and practicals.

After completion of their training, they will play a major role in job creation and will assist the department in speeding up road construction.

The programme is expected to create about 2583 new job opportunities and most beneficiaries will be women and the youth.

Meanwhile, students who are participating in the programme said they were disturbed because they had completed a six-month training course but did not know what to do.

However, Kekana indicated the initiative had created 1193 job opportunities in the province, but the number had doubled in the 2007-08 financial year.
