Mokoka takes on Soweto

PENCIL-slim Stephen Mokoka plans to continue with his incredible form by winning the 10km road race of the Nedbank Soweto Marathon on November 1.

PENCIL-slim Stephen Mokoka plans to continue with his incredible form by winning the 10km road race of the Nedbank Soweto Marathon on November 1.

"It's gonna be a tough race because the majority of big-name runners from South Africa and neighbouring countries will also be in Soweto on that day," Mokoka said.

"This was a great season for me but the plan is to end it on a high note by winning the Soweto Marathon, which remains one of the big athletics events in the country."

A sports management student at Vaal University of Technology, Mokoka's major achievements this year were winning the South African half marathon and 10 000m titles.

Mokoka, a self-confessed admirer of Hendrick Ramaala, whom he describe as his role model, finished a credible eight in the World Half Marathon in England two weeks ago.

In Soweto, the in-form Mokoka will have to brace himself for stiff opposition from the likes of Jeffrey Gwebu and Tshamano Setone.

In the women's section of the 10km race, Lebo Phalula will compete with other top runners like twin sister Lebohang, Rene Kalmer and Poppy Mlambo for the top honours.

The standard marathon (42,2km) will also see household names like Johannes Kekana, Mabutile Lebopo, Shadrack Hoff and Mamorallo Tjoka competing.

As usual, there will also be a strong contingent of runners from neighbouring Zimbabwe.

Kakata Maponyane, Athletics South Africa deputy president, said they were expecting more than 20 000 people to participate in this year's Soweto Marathon.
