GAUTENG police have promised heavy security at shopping malls during the festive season.

Acting provincial head of SAPS Superintendent Eugene Opperman said: "We will intensify our efforts everywhere, especially shopping centres . that is where we normally get more crime during the (festive) season."

"I will not divulge more details on the issue, we can't tell criminals the details of what we are going to do."

This weekend, a shopping mall in Dunkeld, a supermarket in Meyerton and a store in Jeppestown were robbed. In Jeppestown, the 60-year-old owner of City Hall Outfitters was shot dead.

An armed group grabbed cash from the shop and also stole leather jackets before fleeing in two cars. No arrests have been made.
