Last respects for dead players

THOUSANDS of mourners converged on the tiny dorpie of Burgersdorp outside Tzaneen in Limpopo to pay their last respects to four of the five people who died in an accident while on their way to a soccer match last week.

THOUSANDS of mourners converged on the tiny dorpie of Burgersdorp outside Tzaneen in Limpopo to pay their last respects to four of the five people who died in an accident while on their way to a soccer match last week.

The four people were buried yesterday.

One of the victims was buried separately at the same village on Saturday.

MEC for roads and transport Pinkie Kekana was among the people who attended the funeral.

Nonkie Maluleke, 30, Msilo Shipelana, 19, Siphiwe Shamango, 21, and little Tebogo Ramoshaba, 7, died when the bakkie in which they were travelling overturned on October 10. Maluleke, Shipelana and Shamango were members of the Burgersdorp Shining Stars soccer team. Ramoshaba was accompanying his uncle to watch the soccer game when he died.

Kekana told mourners that the accident would be investigated to find out what was the cause.

She said the issue of bakkies taking players to sports matches would also be looked into.

"We need to provide transport support for teams to be able to honour matches to avoid situations where teams are subjected to unreliable transport," Kekana said.

Speaking at the funeral, Safa president Kirsten Nematandani said the association would establish support structures to ensure that players were transported in a manner that would ensure their safety.

Safa has contributed R1000 to each of the bereaved families to assist in the funeral costs.

Nematandani also pledged two full soccer kits to Burgersdorp Shining Stars as a gesture of goodwill.
