THEY have the energy, the attitude and the talent to challenge the rest in the competitive Afro-pop scene.

THEY have the energy, the attitude and the talent to challenge the rest in the competitive Afro-pop scene.

On the eve of a performance at Macufe in Bloemfontein recently, Kaya visited Sowetan to share their enthusiasm and steady climb to the top.

They mesmerised fans at the festival.

The group from Bloemfontein says they have a competitive edge because their music is not just melodious but is pregnant with messages.

They have already won the Best Newcomer prize at the Metro FM awards.

Kaya also has fans across the borders of South Africa who are intrigued by their melodic sounds and extraordinary performances.

The group was formed by Mbulelo "Sweety" Davis, Gijimani Mayo, Thabang "Tezo" Matsepe and Mpho January in 1999.

They released their debut album, Kinzima, in 2005 after exploring the ins and outs of the music industry.

They have become a professionally branded entity with a mature sound that sets them apart from similarly classified groups.

Their performances are a combination of vocal harmonies with a touch of dynamic dance routines.

This choreography has allowed Kaya to share the stage with several highly respected musicians and artists.

The group says their latest album, Vulamasango, will intrigue the market with its harmonies, melodic sounds and the traditional elements incorporated in it.
