IT WAS not the result either team wanted as the two glamour clubs of South African soccer attempted to force their way to the forefront of the Premier League championship race.

For all this, the rousing 2-2 Premier League draw between Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs at Atteridgeville's Super Stadium on Saturday afternoon produced the kind of pulsating entertainment of old for the 28000 crowd as a measure of compensation for the failure to gain the much-needed three points.

And, in a match in which both teams enjoyed the lead in turn and produced several individual performances of a high note, the overriding hero undoubtedly was 37-year-old Chiefs goalkeeper Arthur Bartman, who was only signed by Chiefs as an emergency reinforcement to fill the gap left by the injured Itumeng Khune after the start of the season.

Bartman made two heroic, point-blank saves from Katlego Mphela in the opening half and then prevented what was effectively Sundowns winning goal for the third time in the 80th minute when Sundowns substitute Lebohang Mokoena was poised to score.

In another game Jomo Cosmos and Amazulu played to a 1-all draw. Ntokozo Sikhakhane scored for Usuthu and Sekou Camara equalised for Ezenkosi. - Sapa
