THE boyfriend of a pregnant teenager is unhappy after she was allegedly assaulted and suffocated by a senior police officer at Nqutu in the northern KwaZulu-Natal.
It's alleged that the 17-year-old girl was held in police custody for hours and assaulted by the head of crime prevention.
This allegedly happened after the cop had left his wallet on a bank counter last week while the suspect, Samukelisiwe Manama, had been sent by her boyfriend Jabulani Michele to deposit school fees.
Michele said his pregnant girlfriend was harassed and suffocated by the cops, accusing her of stealing the wallet. He said police first called him asking for directions to his home.
"I gave them the direction because I knew she had not committed any crime. But when they arrived at my house on Wednesday they took her," said Michele.
He said the cops alleged Manama stole a wallet - which they claim had an ID book, a drivers' license and R300 - belonging to a senior officer based at Nqutu.
"And I do not know how they got my cellphone numbers. I suppose the bank gave them the details without informing me and there was no case opened.
"They claim that they saw the video footage at the bank. My girlfriend was assaulted and suffocated with plastic as cops forced her to admit that she took the wallet ."
Michele said Manama lied to the police to save her life and that of her unborn child.
"I had appealed to the police not to take her. I even offered to pay for everything that they suspect my girlfriend had stolen."
Police spokesperson Shoos Magdalena confirmed that a case of assault was opened by Manama yesterday.
