Karabo to be Fifa agent

SOWETAN Karabo Mathang has made history by becoming the only woman in South Africa to pass the Fifa agent's examination.

SOWETAN Karabo Mathang has made history by becoming the only woman in South Africa to pass the Fifa agent's examination.

Mathang, 23, described the achievement a major breakthrough in achieving a long-held dream of managing players.

The examination results were released last week.

"It's a great achievement for her, she was the only one who passed the examinations out of 10 people," Safa chief executive officer Raymond Hack said.

Sowetan caught up with Mathang at her posh offices in Newtown yesterday, where she explained that soccer has always been in her blood.

"I come from Orlando in Soweto. When Orlando Pirates or Kaizer Chiefs win their games we go to the streets to celebrate.

"When I received a letter from Safa signed by Raymond Hack informing me on October 5 that I passed the examination, I was on cloud nine. I was jumping up and down because I failed twice in 2007 and 2008. I will definitely add value in this male-dominated industry."

A part-time international relations student at Wits University, Mathang is the co-director of P Management, a company she formed with friends and relatives.

"We are big in mana-ging the coaches. We also work with some of them, like Teboho Moloi, Bashin Mahlangu and Botsotso Makhanya, to conduct coaching clinics."

Mathang is on a six- month probation period before Fifa grants her the licence and must first be recommended by Safa. She must also get a R1million guarantee.

"We are working hard to get the insurance, which will serve as a guarantee," she said.
