TOP provincial wheelchair basketball teams will be back in action at this month's Vodacom National Challenge at the Nelson Mandela Metro University, Missionvale Campus, in Port Elizabeth, from October 21 to 25.

The event sanctioned by Wheelchair Basketball South Africa (WBSA) pits the top eight senior provincial teams against each other for the title of national champions, as well as the chance to progress to the Vodacom Cup on October 31.

WBSA director of operations Charles Saunders, said: "It is difficult to pick favourites for this year's event as two outsiders, Eastern Cape and North West, made it to the finals last year."

But Saunders said that "Central Gauteng, Gauteng North and North West are all looking like possible title contenders at this early stage".

The Eastern Cape team, who pulled off a remarkable victory in last year's championship event, after finishing last in the inaugural event the year before, will be back to defend their title.

They will be joined by teams from the Western Cape, North West, Free State, southern, central and northern Gauteng, and the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, who will aim to emulate last year's achievement by Eastern Cape in adding the Vodacom Cup to their Vodacom National Challenge title.

The two teams that reach the finals of the challenge will contest the one-game playoff for the Cup after a gruelling round robin-structured tournament, offering wheelchair basketball fans one last chance to watch the top two South African teams battle it out for the Cup title at the Mandeville Indoor Sports Arena on October 31. - Sapa
