Union woos young workers

THE lack of youth participation within the labour movement is now a thing of the past, according to the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union.

The union will be holding a National Young Workers Conference from tomorrow to Saturday at Birchwood Conference Centre in Boksburg.

According to Satawu, this convention of young workers stems from a resolution taken at the 2006 National Congress which "explicitly mandated the union to develop a platform for the advancement of young workers issues of interest as well as to develop a tool to recruit them".

Satawu deputy general secretary Nelson Lamityi said his union recognises the need to highlight young worker's concerns.

Apart from other tripartite representatives who will address the conference, Minister of Women, Youth, Children and People with Disabilities, Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya, is on the list of expected guests.

Cosatu national spokesperson Patrick Craven said the trade federation "fully" supports Satawu's attempt to mobilise young workers.
