LEGENDARY jazz saxophonist Winston Mankunku Ngozi, 66, died at Victoria Hospital in Wynberg, Cape Town, yesterday.

LEGENDARY jazz saxophonist Winston Mankunku Ngozi, 66, died at Victoria Hospital in Wynberg, Cape Town, yesterday.

Saxophonist Sipho Hotstix Mabuse said: "It is very difficult. Death is something we can never get used to. I was inspired by him to play the saxophone."

Music promoter Peter Tladi said: "He was one artist that any promoter would be proud to work with. His famous song Yakhal'Inkomo had a lot to do with the development of African township jazz. He has left us with a great legacy."

Minister of Arts and Culture Lulu Xingwana said: "Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mankunku. He will continue to live on through the memories we share through his powerful music. He was a true African legend."
