Phalula twins planning to join Striders

TWIN sisters Lebogang and Lebo Phalula are set to change clubs from the University of Johannesburg to the Gauteng Striders.

TWIN sisters Lebogang and Lebo Phalula are set to change clubs from the University of Johannesburg to the Gauteng Striders.

The siblings, who came first and second in the Spar Women's Challenge on Sunday, have been with the University of Johannesburg since January and Lebogang can't wait to leave.

"I'm happy to be leaving UJ and joining the Gauteng Striders. I was never really appreciated at UJ. I had to use my own money to attend athletics meetings as I was never provided with transport," Lebogang said. "They never even said thank you, even after I had won."

She said she did not bother talking to the club about her problems, "because as an athlete they should have made it a point that all my needs were met. However, I'm looking forward to joining the Gauteng Striders and hopefully things will be better for me and my sister there".

Gauteng Striders founder Livingstone Jabanga said he was excited at the possibility of the siblings joining his club.

"They are not with us yet because they are still contracted to UJ but I'm hopeful that they'll join us next year. I rate them highly as athletes and it would be absolutely great to have them on board,"Jabanga said.

"I think with the 2012 Olympics in England fast approaching, every club would like to be associated with them. They are top-class athletes and we are going to offer them contracts at the end of this month, but they can only join us in January."

Attempts to get comment from UJ drew a blank.
