Limpopo planning for life after 2010

WITH the builders putting the final touches to the new Peter Mokaba Sports Complex, Limpopo plans to use the 2010 World Cup to reposition itself as the province of choice.

WITH the builders putting the final touches to the new Peter Mokaba Sports Complex, Limpopo plans to use the 2010 World Cup to reposition itself as the province of choice.

Limpopo premier Cassel Mathale said the quadrennial soccer spectacle would help them achieve the province's objective of becoming a must-visit are in two years' time.

"The 2010 World Cup will be a great platform for us to sell Polokwane and the entire Limpopo to other South Africans coming here for the matches," he said.

"We also hope to win the hearts of the more than 500000 tourists expected in South Africa for the tournament to visit our province even after the World Cup.

"The tourists will also be our ambassadors throughout the world, telling their friends, relatives and colleagues that Limpopo is the place to go to when you need peace of mind."

He said for the 2010 World Cup, everything is going according to plan in Polokwane and throughout the province.

"We are thrilled that the main facility, which is the stadium, is now complete.

"The logistics are also well on track, but we are not there yet as the constructors are still busy with the road network around Polokwane.

"We are going to host major 2010 World Cup matches, so it is important to have a world-class road network from the airport and all other entry points into the city.

"We are also expanding the road from the airport to the N1, considering that there will be many flights landing and leaving the airport to and from OR Tambo and Durban airports."

Mathale said they were happy that Polokwane and surrounding areas were coping with the accommodation challenges for the World Cup, and had won the approval of Fifa's official hospitality programme provider, Match Hospitality.

"Match Hospitality are happy with our preparations around the issue of accommodation.

"We will deliver a memorable 2010 World Cup."
