ATHENS - An international rights group urged the European Union yesterday to pressure Greece's new socialist government to end the "abusive" treatment of illegal migrants, tens of thousands of whom enter the country every year.

A Human Rights Watch report accused EU member Greece of detaining migrants, including unaccompanied children, in poor conditions, blocking their access to the asylum process and conducting illegal expulsions to Turkey.

"Greece's abusive detention of migrants has gone unchecked for too long," said a researcher at the rights group. - Sapa-AP
