RABAT - A Moroccan woman was jailed for three years yesterday for violently abusing an 11-year-old maid - but rights groups said the sentence was too lenient.

The woman, wife of a civil servant, was also fined 100000 dirhams (R95500) for her brutality against the "little maid," Zineb Chetite, whose case attracted widespread attention in Morocco.

But several Moroccan rights groups said they would appeal on behalf of the country's estimated 80000 child labourers.

"This sentence doesn't reflect the atrocities committed," said Najia Adib, of the association "Touche pas a mes enfants" (Don't Touch My Children). - Sapa-AFP
