AIRPORT Company South Africa (Acsa) and national department of transport announced that both airports in Durban will be operating during the 2010 World Cup.
This was revealed by Transport Minister S'bu Ndebele during a site visit to the La Mercy-King Shaka international airport construction site yesterday.
Ndebele's visit to the site was to assess progress and to commemorate the October Transport Month.
He was accompanied by Acsa official Monhla Hlahla, acting KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu and Elham Ibrahim, an African Union Commissioner for Infrastructure.
Ndebele said as the country gets ready to host the World Cup, major developments in transport infrastructure are taking place.
The building of the new international airport, which cost more than R7billion, is close to completion.
Construction, government and Acsa officials are confident that the first international flights will take off in March.
The world class airport is the first of it kind in Africa and a first green fields airport in South Africa.
Ndebele said while the airport will come into operation in March, owing to the Fifa World Cup they will keep the two Durban airports operational to cater for the expected influx of passengers during that period.
He also revealed that the airport has not yet been named.
Hlahla applauded workers for their dedication to complete the airport on time.
