This is after the police shot and killed Olga Kekana, 29, of Stinkwater near Pretoria, when they fired at the car in which she was travelling.
The police suspected that Kekana and her companions were hijackers after a car similar to the one they were travelling in was reported hijacked.
"We are forced to break our silence after a woman was shot dead in Pretoria under suspicion of carjacking.
"We are obviously not so naive as to suggest that the killing of the woman was perpetrated by the war talk on crime, but this case shows the consequences of giving police a licence to kill," president of the league Buti Manamela told students at the Tshwane University for Technology yesterday.
"We hold the view that no one, especially the state, should have the right to kill anybody, including criminals," Manamela said.
Meanwhile, the Independent Complaints Directorate confirmed yesterday it was investigating Kekana's death.
"At this stage it seems to have been a case of mistaken identity," ICD spokesperson Moses Dlamini said.
