WHAT does a day in the life of a zone manager in the biomedical technology field entail?
I carry out various tasks such as assessing the blood procured or collected, report on successes and challenges and determine demand and plan for blood collections in my area.
I also set up meetings, discussions, workshops or brainstorming sessions and decide on marketing campaigns.
I am also required to handle certain aspects of financial management, such as formulating budgets, monitoring costs and authorising Capex budgets.
I am also responsible for the total quality management where I monitor the system, ensure product compliance to quality standards and set up, monitor and continuously improve customer service programmes.
As a manager there is always the aspect of staff management and development, including staff recruitment, monitoring and facilitating the training and development of staff, monitoring staff performance and, on occasion, I get involved in employee relations
Areas of general management would include doing business planning and budgeting, running work optimisation initiatives and continuously carrying out business risk assessments and management.
Why did you decide on this career?
The idea of improving the lives of others has always appealed to me and that is why I studied what I did. My career has just progressed into this particular field.
How did you get into this career?
I initially studied biomedical technology, later enhancing my management skills with courses such as the middle-management programme, management advancement programme and advanced management learning programme.
What's challenging about the job?
Balancing all the elements of the balanced score card is a challenge.
What do you enjoy the most about being a zone manager?
The fact that I add value to and improve the quality of the lives of so many people I will never meet.
What type of person will make a success of this position?
Someone with good planning and organising skills, focussed and results oriented. An individual who loves working with people, who can build successful and cohesive teams and delegate effectively. A creative and innovative solution provider who is quality and customer focussed and above all, someone with exceptionally high integrity and ethical standards.
