PREPARATIONS for security during the 2010 Soccer World Cup are "well under way", the Ministry of State Security has said.

The ministry said this yesterday after weekend media reports warned of a potential terrorist threat to the soccer spectacular.

"We are on top of the situation and confident of hosting a secure Soccer World Cup event," the ministry said in a statement.

"The intelligence services and police are working closely to provide the security needed for such an event."

The ministry noted reports in the Cape Argus, SundayTribune and Sunday Independent indicating South Africa was not prepared for a potential terrorist threat during the World Cup next year. - Sapa
