The CAS, sport's highest tribunal, said Onyia tested positive for the substance methylhexaneamine (used as a nasal decongestant) at a meeting in Lausanne in September 2008 and for clenbuterol (used as a bronchodilator but banned for athletes) at the world athletics final in Stuttgart the same month.
In both cases, the Spanish federation exonerated the Nigerian-born 23-year-old athlete of any offence, the CAS said, prompting an appeal from the sport's governing body, the International Association of Athletics Federations.
"The Court of Arbitration for Sport has upheld the two appeals filed by the International Association of Athletics Federations and has annulled the initial decisions of the Spanish Athletics Federation," the CAS said. "Consequently, Josephine Onyia is declared ineligible for two years."
The ban started from September 22 but Onyia, who won the 100m hurdles at Stuttgart, would be given credit for the 316 days of provisional suspension already served and the violations were treated as a single offence. - Reuters
