THE executive committee of the Makhuduthamaga municipality has resolved to dissolve the institution's audit committee after accusing it of incompetence.

The decision to dissolve the four-member committee, which was headed by Harold Matsepe, was taken during an Exco meeting in the municipality on Wednesday.

The executive committee was expected to meet the municipal council late yesterday for the council to take a final decision on the future of the audit committee.

Among other things, the audit committee was tasked with overseeing theissuing of tenders at the municipality.

Matsepe yesterday declined to comment on the matter.

But a source said municipal manager Morebudi Thamaga wanted the dissolution of the committee in favour of those in his good books.

Thamaga was also accused by municipal officials of imposing decisions on them without consulting anyone.

The source said the current audit committee had been questioning some of the decisions Thamaga had taken, hence the motion to have it dissolved.

But the council is reportedly divided on the issue of the dissolution of the audit committee.

Reports from the municipality say there are other officials who wanted it to be retained while a small section of them were in favour of its dissolution.

Mayor Queen Mokhabela could not be reached for comment as her cellphone was off.

Thamaga denied the allegations levelled at him, saying it was the responsibility of the council to decide on the future of the audit committee and not his.

"All I can say is that the audit committee has shown a high level of dysfunctionality," he said.

"But the decision as to whether it should be dissolved lies with the council and not me."
