Zondo back in national fold, this time with Amabinneplaas

FORMER Bafana Bafana assistant coach Khabo Zondo has been given a new lease of life after being asked to guide the senior national development team popularly known as Amabinneplaas.

FORMER Bafana Bafana assistant coach Khabo Zondo has been given a new lease of life after being asked to guide the senior national development team popularly known as Amabinneplaas.

The squad will be off to Zimbabwe later this month to defend their Cosafa Castle Challenge title.

Guided by Serame "Rhee" Letsoaka, Amabinneplaas won the tournament in Nelspruit last year after beating Mozambique 2-1 in the final.

Simon "Malome" Ngomane, former head of the Safa coaching department, will serve as Zondo's assistant.

"It's good to be back in a national setup, there is no way you can turn your back when the country needs your expertise," said Zondo. "Simon and I are looking forward to doing our utmost to help the team do well in Zimbabwe.

"There are still a few contractual agreements to sort out but we are happy."

The last time Zondo served as a technical staff member of a national team was when coach Carlos Alberto Parreira was still the coach of Bafana Bafana. His contract as an assistant coach was terminated after he remained with Bloemfontein Celtic in the build-up to the Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana last year.

Since then, Zondo - who has also served as coach at Tembisa Classic, Lamontville Golden Arrows and Bay United - has been snubbed by Bafana Bafana.

Cosafa president Suketu Patel has also announced the return of Castle Lager as sponsors of this popular southern African regional tournament. This year's event will be held in Harare and Bulawayo from October 17 until November 1.

Zambia play Namibia, while Amabinneplaas take on Angola. Malawi are scheduled to meet Mozambique.
