Sowetan has learnt that Matsatsantsa a Pitori have written a letter of complaint to Safa expressing their disappointment at the manner in which the mother body handled Hunt's deployment.
United said they learnt about the move through the media.
Hunt, Jomo Cosmos owner-coach Jomo Sono and AmaZulu technical director Clive Barker have been appointed to a task team by Safa to assess the ailing national team's performance.
In a letter to Safa, United's top brass reminded the federation that Hunt had a full-time contract with the club as their head coach.
United have asked Safa to explain the call-up and the duties that will be performed by the task team so that the board can make an informed decision.
United feel that Safa's national executive committee should have approached them before calling a media briefing to talk about the appointment of Hunt.
Safa are expected to apologise to United today.
Hunt said he was honoured to be chosen to assist Bafana Bafana, adding that he would wait for his job description before commenting further.
Barker said: "I'm delighted to help in any way, as long as it's not going to be (the role of) of a policeman. We need to have a great team to make the country proud during the Cup."
Sono could not be reached for comment but is reported to have responded positively to Safa's emergency call.
Safa chief executive Raymond Hack will meet Sono, Barker and Hunt today to discuss their appointments and job description.
"The trio will assess the performance of Bafana Bafana and submit reports to the national executive. It's not only for the games against Norway and Iceland," Hack said.
Meanwhile, South African soccer leaders will present a united front during their meeting with Fifa president Sepp Blatter in Zurich today.
Also attending the meeting will be PSL chairperson Irvin Khoza, who will come face to face with the new Safa leadership for the first time since the elections. Safa will be led by new president Kirsten Nematandani and two vice-presidents, Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana and Mandla Mazibuko.
LOC chief executive Danny Jordaan will also attend.
