AN exhibition titled "Separate is not equal" was launched at the KwaMuhle Museum by the United States Consul General in Durban and the Ethekwini municipality on Monday.
The launch brought together pupils and teachers from around Durban as part of celebrating Teacher's Day. The guest speaker was American Johnny Mack, the executive vice-president and chief operations officer of Realising the Dream - a non-profit organisation founded by the late Martin Luther King III.
"Nothing splendid, nothing marvellous has ever been achieved except by those who would dare to believe that something within them is superior, their internal drive" Mack said.
Mack encouraged both pupils and teachers to "dream big".
"Dream great dreams and follow them through, then you will not have to worry about being separate and equal," he said.
Mack said from the very beginning, "change was always brought about by young people".
He said this was also true in the case of South Africa "where young people had led the fight against apartheid. The youth had brought about changes in various situations in the fight for equality. A heavy weight is being placed on your shoulders and the challenge is for you to create changes on that which was done by the youth before you".
