MANGOSUTHU University of Technology is to appoint a new vice chancellor next month.
But the successful candidate will only take over the top position in January 2010.
The short-listing and interviewing of applicants for the position - previously occupied by suspended vice chancellor Aaron Ndlovu - is currently under way.
Yesterday university spokesperson Jerome Ngwenya said a panel appointed to shortlist the applications for vice chancellor included members of the university council and members of the Student Representative Council (SRC).
Applications for the position were advertised in August and the closing date was the end of September.
While the recruitment process is under way, Ndlovu faces an internal hearing expected to be concluded in the next few weeks. He was suspended from the university last year after allegations of poor governance and mismanagement of university funds.
The list of charges against Ndlovu include that of assaulting a lecturer allegedly after he (Ndlovu) was suspended.
Prof Jonathan Jansen was appointed by former Minister of Education Naledi Pandor early this year as caretaker administrator to restore normality at the institution in Umlazi.
Ngwenya said the hearings were set to be concluded by next Friday.
He said that the members of the council would then be briefed about the findings of the hearings.
"The executive committee will be briefed on the findings and on the recommendations before finally making their decision.
"Possibly the verdict (on the application) would be made two weeks after the conclusion of the hearing."
