POLICE are hot on the heels of soccer star Lerato Chabangu.

The Mamelodi Sundowns striker is accused of assaulting a friend's wife on Sunday.

Records at Booysens police station show that Busisiwe Lekuba of Ormonde, South of Johannesburg, opened an assault case against Chabangu, pictured.

Booysens police spokesperson Inspector Lorraine van Emmerik confirmed the case. "We are expecting to arrest him today. The only reason behind the delay was that the officer investigating the case was in court the whole day (yesterday)."

Lekuba said the apparently booze-fuelled incident happened when Chabangu visited her house with three friends.

"They found me chilling with my friends. They were drinking whisky and some beers. After a while I said my husband was coming to pick me up (because we were going somewhere). That was when he hit me on the head with a fist and violently grabbed my hands. I have no idea why he did that. I got upset and told him I was going to lay charges," said Lekuba.

"He said he was coming with us to the police station but disappeared along the way."

This is not the first time Chabangu has found himself in hot water.

In May last year the 23-year-old player was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding in his Audi A3 in Thembisa, Ekurhuleni. Four months earlier, he was arrested for speeding in the same car on the N1 highway in Johannesburg.
