Chuene must resign now

ATHLETICS South Africa has completely missed the plot over the Caster Semenya saga. Chuene undoubtedly erred in hisjudgment for Semenya to take part in IAAF competitions in spite of advice by ASA doctors to the contrary.

ATHLETICS South Africa has completely missed the plot over the Caster Semenya saga. Chuene undoubtedly erred in hisjudgment for Semenya to take part in IAAF competitions in spite of advice by ASA doctors to the contrary.

Cheune's action attests to the conservative and myopic leadership that ASA practices. His claims that he lied to protect Semenya are not only far-fetched and ridiculous, but show his shallow-mindedness and ineptitude in handling the matter.

I find his reasoning very strange, that by concealing Semenya's gender-test results, he was protecting her fromhumiliation.

If Chuene had Semenya's interests at heart as he claims, he would have pulled her out of the Berlin competition, instead of exposing her to international humiliation and violation. His actions speak volumes of his intellectual bankruptcy.

It is embarrassing that people allow political allegiance to cloud their judgment by supporting this clueless, spineless and self-confessed liar. His days as ASA president have reached a dead end. His demise in the sports arena is self-inflicted and inevitable. He should do the honourable thing and step down. His reputation and track record as someone who has brought much-needed transformation to ASA has been indelibly tarnished and has crumbled.

Someone who has the interests of the sport and nation at heart should spare us further embarrassment and take over the reigns as ASA president. Someone with a clean, untainted reputation and track record. South Africa is a nation with passion for sport, but the latest trend of political meddling is putting paid to our potential as a sporting powerhouse.

It is quite gratifying that sanity is beginning to prevail in regions like Boland, Eastern and Western Cape that are calling for a very firm stand against Chuene.
