TWENTY-TWO patients and two hospital staff members were injured when a hospital bus shuttle overturned in Nquthu, Dundee, yesterday morning.
KwaZulu-Natal health officials said the driver had apparently hit a cow and lost control of the vehicle.
The bus was travelling on the Helpmekaar road transporting patients from local hospitals to hospitals in Durban for specialised treatment when the accident happened.
The patients were seriously injured and two staff members sustained minor injuries.
Provincial health spokesperson Desmond Motha said the injured were taken to Dundee Hospital.
Meanwhile, two provincial health paramedics were critically injured and two horses died in road crashes on the R56 near Pietermaritzburg yesterday.
According to emergency service officials, the state paramedics were injured after the driver of the vehicle tried to swerve to avoid a horse lying on the road that had been hit by a truck.
The two paramedics were taken to hospital.
Another horse was also run over.
"Two horses ended up dying," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks.
"The second horse had been struck by a bakkie and police had to put it down."
In a separate crash, two people were seriously injured when the cars they were travelling in collided at an intersection of West and Broad streets in central Durban yesterday morning.
One car slammed into the side of the other at the intersection, sending it spinning into a store front.
The car came to rest on the pavement near the sales floor of Mr Price on Durban's West Street.
"Netcare 911 paramedics rushed to the scene and found that the drivers of both vehicles had been seriously injured, sustaining head and spinal injuries, as well lacerations and abrasions," said Wicks.
"The wounded people were treated at the scene before they were transported to Addington Hospital by ambulance for further medical care."
