South Africa is the fifth best governed country in Africa after Mauritius, Cape Verde, the Seychelles and Botswana.

This is according to the Mo Ibrahim Governance Index released yesterday by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation in Cape Town.

The foundation's board is made up of millionaire Mo Ibrahim, academic Mamphela Ramphele and former OAU chief Salim Ahmed Salim.

South Africa was also found to be the third best run country in Southern Africa, with Mauritius topping the region's list, followed by Botswana.

Somalia is the worst governed country in the continent , Chad the second worst and Zimbabwe the third worst. - Anna Majavu
