AN uneasy calm descended on Sakhile township in Standerton, Mpumalanga, yesterday after weeks of violent protests.

But pupils fear schooling could again be disrupted if the protests flare up again.

For two weeks residents have been barricading roads and burning public facilities to protest over poor service delivery and alleged corruption and nepotism in the council.

They alleged that more than R30million had gone missing from the Lekwe municipal savings accounts.

Thembisile Dlamini, a Grade 11 pupil at Khunjuliwe Combined School, said: "Anything can happen. I can't say I am happy to be back at school after the September break because we were told schools would be disrupted.

"I really don't feel safe."

President Jacob Zuma's spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said Zuma would not be travelling to the hotspot.

Mpumalanga ANC spokesperson Paul Mbenyane said members of the provincial executive committee were adequately addressing the residents' grievances.
