chiefs beat a tame ajax

KAIZER Chiefs leapfrogged to seventh spot on the Absa Premiership after a well-deserved 3-0 win over Ajax Cape Town in the Mother City yesterday.

KAIZER Chiefs leapfrogged to seventh spot on the Absa Premiership after a well-deserved 3-0 win over Ajax Cape Town in the Mother City yesterday.

This was sweet revenge for Amakhosi, who were dumped out of the MTN 8 Cup by the same Urban Warriors last month in a drama-filled match at Newlands Stadium.

Chiefs made their intentions clear as early as the 27th minute when Kaizer Motaung Jnr put them 1-0 in the lead and Thabang Rooi made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute.

Nkosinathi "Chippa" Nhleko hammered the final nail into Ajax's coffin in the 85th minute after a good pass from Knowledge Musona.

Meanwhile, Chiefs founder Kaizer Motaung has told Sowetan he relinquished his position as managing director of the club to avoid been in charge of the Naturena side forever "like Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe".

This was after the appointment of lesser-known Bheki Shongwe as new managing director, with Motaung now occupying the position of executive chairperson.

"His appointment came after critical consideration of repositioning and strengthening our corporate capacity to meet the dynamic changes in our football," said Motaung.

"As for me, the work is still enormous as I move to oversee the direction of the entire organisation. This obviously allows me time to play golf and also to attend to other family commitments."

Regarding the recent Safa drama-riddled elections, Motaung said: "The situation is made worse by the conduct of some officials who seem to have become self-proclaimed spokespersons of Safa that feed the public with wrong information about the PSL."

In Johannesburg, Bidvest Wits maintained their unbeaten run when they defeated Jomo Cosmos 3-1 at Milpark Stadium yesterday to move to second spot on the log.

Miquel Rodriquez got the first goal of the game from the penalty spot after Mark Haskins was fouled by Thabiso Hlalele in the 26th minute.

Calvin "Dolezar" Kadi, the Premiership's leading scorer, scored in the 78th minute to grab his eighth goal of the season with Marawaan Bantam scoring the third.
