JULIUS Malema's outburst over the Caster Semenya controversy has attracted varied reaction.
Financial experts described the ANC Youth League leader's call for people to boycott Nedbank as "irresponsible and careless".
Malema yesterday threatened to mobilise the public to boycott Nedbank after the bank pulled its sponsorship of Athletics South Africa over its handling of the 800m athlete.
Cas Coovadia, managing director of the Banking Association South Africa said: "It is irresponsible for any person in leadership to make such a call. It definitely won't help the country for customers to pull their money from Nedbank."
"I will be extremely surprised if any one heeds Malema's call.
"But if it happens, it will have an impact on Nedbank but I'm not quite sure how it could affect the entire financial services sector," said Coovadia.
Professor Adrian Saville, of the Gordon Institute of Business Science, calling Malema "careless", said: "If he understood the operations of the banking system he would know that his statement would have a negative impact on the entire banking system.
"His statement can affect everyone, including the youth and the poor that he is trying to protect."
"Malema's call will definitely dent the image of the country but in the global markets people also look at the credibility of the mouth that's talking.
"Malema should have looked for a creative solution to deal with the issues at hand."
AfriForum chief executive Kallie Kriel said: "We cannot tolerate such remarks and such remarks should be eradicated from society. The whole country must stand up to Malema."
Cope spokesperson Phillip Dexter said: "What has he (Malema) been smoking?
"It's disturbing to think that the president of the youth league thinks that Caster Semenya does not deserve an apology.
"I'm shocked. No one should conduct medical tests on anyone without their consent."
Independent Democrats spokesperson Joe Mcgluwa said: "It's disgusting. That girl has been humiliated.
"Chuene must go and the entire ASA board be dissolved. The board is made of spineless and faceless lapdogs."
Mcgluwa said ASA was likely to lose more sponsors - following Nedbank's withdrawal yesterday.
