LUANDA - Britain's foreign office is advising against independent travel to Angola for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

"If you plan to visit Angola for the Afcon, you should do so in the company of persons or organisations experienced in local conditions," the Foreign Office said yesterday.

It warned of high levels of crime in Luanda, and described conditions outside the capital as "difficult and dangerous".

"There is widespread poverty, social exclusion and disease."

It also warned of "millions of mines and items of unexploded ordnance" throughout the country. - Sapa-AFP
