A total of 18 teams from all nine provinces battled for a place in the final on Saturday at Matlosana Stadium.
Defending champions Rosina Sedibane High School from Laudium, Pretoria, were given a shock when they went down 0-2 to Louis Botha of Free State.
In other opening matches, Eletsa of North West beat Intsibenziswano of Western Cape 2-1 and Seiphemelo of North West emerged 3-2 victors over Limpopo's Hudson Ntsanwisi.
Platinum Stars' chief scout, Sam Mbatha, attended the opening matches and stressed the importance of school football.
"It's important that all PSL (teams) send their scouts to such tournaments to shop for new talent," Mbatha said.
"The players should be monitored to ensure that they don't engage in activities that could be disruptive to their careers."
Head of brand and communications for the sponsors, Yasmina Francke, said identifying talent at a young age was important.
"The support we have received for this tournament has been encouraging and it shows that there is huge interest in the development of football.
"Cricket and rugby always do well because there are sound development structures in place for youngsters and that is what we are trying to do with football.
"Some of the players can go on to represent the country."
