Golden Gloves confirmed yesterday that Lovett, who tested positive for steroids after his 10-rounder with Thomas "Tommy Gun" Oosthuizen last month, which he lost, will fight Javier Corrales from Paraguay at Emperors Palace on October 31.
A source within the IBO told Sowetan yesterday that Ed Levine, the president of the IBO, told him from the US that an application for a fight was made by the promoter and had no problem sanctioning the duel.
Lovett, 22, has not been suspended and nothing has happened since he failed the dope test, so Berman is doing exactly what any other promoter would have done, especially considering that Lovett is a huge drawcard.
This fighter from southern Johannesburg has joined the fast-growing Hammer stable of Harold Volbrecht near Rand Stadium.
Boxing SA chairperson Peter Ngatane said he was surprised to read in the media that Lovett would be in action on October 31.
"A date was set up for the hearing. I'm still waiting for an update regarding the hearing," Ngatane said yesterday.
To rub salt into the wound, the same US-based IBO has sanctioned Zolani Marali to fight Mlungsi "The Shark" Dlamini for its lightweight belt on the same card.
Marali is supposed to be serving 60 days' suspension for being knocked out in his previous fight last month, losing the IBO junior lightweight belt to South Korea's Ji Hoon Kim.
Ngatane, a medical doctor by profession, insisted that Marali had been given a 60-day suspension.
"All these things will be sorted out, don't worry. The rules will have to be followed," the Boxing SA chairperson said.
Meanwhile, Oosthuizen and SA junior heavyweight champion Tshepang Mohale will fight for the vacant WBO Africa belt, with Isaac "Golden Boy" Chilemba taking on Doudou Ngumbu of Democratic Republic of Congo for the WBC International light heavyweight belt.
