FRIENDS and former comrades of struggle icon Steve Biko gathered at the Durban University of Technology yesterday to honour him.
Psychologist and former Robben Island prisoner Saths Cooper delivered the keynote address at a memorial lecture to honour the Black Consciousness Movement founder - three decades after his death.
"Biko was in his 20s when he developed the philosophy of black consciousness," Cooper said.
The lecture focused on whether fear is still a "determinant in South African politics". Cooper reminisced about the days he spent with Biko.
"Fear was not an option for Biko. He dealt with whatever fear came his way. He lived in the period where if it where not for him, the country would not be what it is now - democratic - and the rest is history."
Busiswa Gqulu, a student who also delivered a moving poem, said: "Biko lived to serve his people by fighting in their political struggle."
