Promoters Branco Milenkovic and Rodney Berman are the only two who still remember past heroes, particularly those who are now struggling financially.
Other established promoters have the potential to do what Milenkovic and Berman have done but they seem uninterested in helping those who are battling.
That includes trainers, managers and fans.
Milenkovic and Berman have come to the aid of cash-strapped boxing legends such as Nkosana "Happy Boy" Mgxaji, Enock Nhlapho, Anthony Morodi, Simon Skosana and retired promoter Joe Gumede.
The benevolent Milenkovic staged three tournaments in East London, proceeds of which went to Mgxaji, while Berman staged a box-and-dine tournament last year and gave Nhlapho, Morodi, Skosana and Gumede R10 000 each.
On Tuesday night Berman and promoter Jeff Ellis staged a box-and-dine to raise funds for the struggling Thulani "Sugar Boy" Malinga at Emperors Palace.
Forty-eight tables, of which 10 were sold for R3000, and sports memorabilia were auctioned, while 30 boxing gloves signed by Malinga were sold for R500 each.
Ellis said Malinga took home R15 000 from the gloves, and will also get R20000 from the memorabilia.
"I am happy," said Malinga, who still insists that Berman owes him $75000 (about R555000) from his failed defence of the WBC super middleweight belt in 1998.
Hekkie Budler overwhelmed Doctor Ntsele with determination, aggression and accuracy throughout 12 rounds to retain his IBO Africa junior flyweight belt at the tournament.
