Superb artists to jazz up evening

VUSI Mahlasela and Johnny Mekoa, of Music Academy of Gauteng Jazz Orchestra, and Nokukhanya Dlamini will set the stage ablaze on Friday.

VUSI Mahlasela and Johnny Mekoa, of Music Academy of Gauteng Jazz Orchestra, and Nokukhanya Dlamini will set the stage ablaze on Friday.

The trio will perform at the Oude Meester Ekurhuleni Jazz Evening at the Birchwood Hotel from 7.30pm.

Mahlasela is one of the finest artists whose international exposure is highly underplayed. He is also one of the few artists who enjoy the rare privilege of having their music played on South African Airways.

Mahlasela has written countless scores of beautiful music about our people's experiences in the struggle for freedom and his music continues to stay evergreen, evoking appreciative comments from audiences all over the world.

Family factory

Dlamini came into the music fold via the highly acclaimed Family Factory. Its focus was unearthing talent from aspirant gospel artists, especially in Durban. She became one of their rare finds.

Not only has she survived the dog eat dog industry but she continues to woo more and more fans with her silky smooth voice.

After experiencing the devastating loss of friend and leader of the band Victor Ndlazilwane, everybody thought Mekoa had reached the end of the road. But big on action and not words, he started the academy, an institution that has served young people well.

Watching the academy band is like peeking into the future. Mekoa and his team have done an excellent job with their charges.

For a bit of jazz, gospel and home-grown soulful sounds, a sumptuous meal, a complimentary bottle of Oude Meester, red and white wine, hang out with the beautiful people of Gauteng at the Jazz Evening.
